I took a short ride this afternoon to the end of the DJ Rally at the James Hall museum of transport in Johannesburg.
The DJ Rally is a Sealed Odo time controlled rally between Durban and Johannesburg (That is where the name DJ comes from) and motorbikes that were manufactured before the 1st of January 1937 qualify to participate in the rally.
On Friday morning approximately 90 Motorbikes started from Pinetown and overnighted in Newcastle. This Morning approximately 80 Motorbikes started from Newcastle and approximately 70 finished in Johannesburg today.
The Rally commemorates the race that took place up to 1936 between Durban and Johannesburg.
Here a few pictures I took of the bikes ending. Hope you are not too bored.
This 1936 BMW R5 belongs to Ian Melass - His picture is on the club notice board with him in a BMW sidecar chasing away lions
A 1936 BMW R17
Two Lovely 1935 BMW R12's
Simon Fourie from Bike SA on his 1935 BMW R12
Simon Looks as if he just came from Durban ....
Number 86 is the oldest rider in the rally - 86 years old on a 1930 Norton
a 1931 AJS Big Twin with Sidecar - note the passenger in the sidecar is wearing a neck brace
One of only 3 lady riders, this specific lady brought her broken down bike home 2 years ago by pushing a 2 litre coke bottle in front of her jacket filled with petrol and a pipe running from it to the carburettor. Talk about perseverance to collect the finishers medal.
Rick Lewis - the overnight leader on a 1929 Sunbeam
a 1934 BMW R4
Entries for this rally comes as far as Zimbabwe and Tanzania, this Zimbabwean couple finished in their 1922 Royal Enfield with a sidecar
The oldest bike in the field - a 1909 Hummer 500cc Pedal Cycle
