We all understand that things, including bikes, break and need to be repaired, but how long should that repair take.
I recently went on the normal Sunday morning breakfast run. When I got home, I found the back wheel loose. That Monday I contacted my local dealership who kindly came and fetched the bike from my home.
They later informed me that parts had to be ordered which would take about 10 days. When I enquired if this was a common fault, I was told that they had never seen this before. I later found out from the mechanic that they had in deed had similar breakdowns with another 2 bikes.
Luckily this was covered by the Warranty for which I am greatfull.
What disturbs me is the time it took to repair.
I believe a week is reasonable.
2 weeks, I am getting impatient and irritable.
3 weeks, I am now pissed off ( always better than being pissed on !)
Any longer , I want a loan or even a new bike !
I understand that the dealers or even the suppliers can not keep every part in stock, but fail to understand why it takes 3 weeks to get a part from Germany from the manufacturer. If this has happened to other bikes, maybe this part should be kept in stock. Maybe this should also be a factory recall. If it wasn't for me having a centre stand , which is an option on my bike, I may have had an accident as a result of the backwheel working loose.
Another gripe is that when you ask for a "loan" bike you are given a flat "NO, we do not have bikes to lend out to everyone who is waiting for spares parts" How many people are we talking about here?
This is my 4th BMW I have owned but find that the more bikes I own, the worse the aftersales service becomes.
I can not blame the dealer for the delay which lies solely with the supplier. I can blame the dealer for the apathy and "take-it-or-leave-it" attitude of that is how long it takes. I also blame the dealer for lack of communication keeping the customer informed.
I would like to know from my fellow BMW bikers - is this an isolated incident or the norm. Is this the type of service we need to expect.
I dont want this to be a "mud-slinging" excercise. Names, dealerships etc dont need to be mentioned - that is not the point .The point of this exercise is " how long has your bike repair taken - good and bad - and why.
