Hi Guys,
With the GS Challenge coming up thick and fast, I have purchase a Garmin Vista GPS unit which is mounted to the handle bar on my 1200 GS. I have heard that they will give you GPS co-ordinates at registration to follow for that days ride, being either the red, blue or novice. What I need to know is if anyone has such a device, could maybe assist me with entering GPS co-ordinates, showing me how to set up the GPS so that when you ride, it will store the route so that if you need to travel that route again, it can be recalled up again.
The owners manual is like most manuals, very confusing and although you can get it in electronic format, doing a search does not always find what you are looking for.
I hope that someone can assist me.
When people show route on this or other forums, could the also include some GPS co-ordinates which will assist others to enjoy the same routes without getting lost? What are your thoughts regarding this idea?
Regards Eddie

Hi Eddie I do not have the the Vista GPS, but a 276C. The best way of entering GPS points is by using the Mapsource software (normally supplied with your Garmin). You download all the data, routes, tracks and waypoints from the software by means of a USB/serial cable. You can enter waypoints on the GPS by simply pressing the mark button and entering the coordinates (Which is very cumbersome). You can also go to tracks on your GPS and save the active track. Remember that tracks is not the same as routes. Routes are waypoints that you planned, while tracks are stuff you have ridden (Your GPS will show breadcrumbs as you travel). In any case if you choose a saved track you can go to the navigate function and if all works it will give directions to follow. The guys that arrange the GAGSC will probably supply the routes on the web a week beforehand or you can go and download it there (Remember to take your dowloading cable along!!!) I will not advise you to go GSing alone but some routes are available from www.bmw-motorrad.co.za/default.html under routes 2 ride. The guys have lots of routes to ride and if you are looking for anything specific just ask and I am sure we can arrange something. Hope this helps

Thanks for the info, We are going for a ride on Sunday morning, dirt roads and so forth. I will try what you have suggested and we will go from there. I do not go GSing by myself as anything could happen, we ride in a group. ;D
