Other countries, 1200GS models have a charcoal cannister mounted there - the removal of which is a popular modification. We don't have it to start with - so why hasn't somebody come up with a good idea of what to put there... 
I sat looking at the space for a while and came up with two possibilities:
1. A can of reserve oil
2. A tool-roll
Both could handle any heat radiated from the 'zorstparp' and do not have to be accessed daily. A nice canvas bag and secure strapping should do it...
